Tour Guides/Docents
Docents for "The Way We Worked" are tour guides who conduct lead observation-based and inquiry-led tours. No formal training or experience is required to become a docent forthe exhibit. Enthusiasm and commitment are the main qualifications needed. We also need volunteers to greet people, ask them to sign the guest book, and sell merchandise.
The success of Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit depends heavily upon volunteers in the community where shown. While we have enjoyed the hard efforts of many local citizens during the planning stages, many more individuals are needed to serve as docents (or tour guides) during the hours of operation. Docents will receive training and an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the exhibit before they begin their official duties as docents.
Ideally, people will sign up for a three-hour shift once a week during the 6 weeks the exhibit will be on display in Cowan. (March 10 through April 21, 2012), for a total committment of 18 hours.
Training will be held on Friday, February 24 and Saturday, February 25 at 9 am and 1 pm. Plan to attend one session out of the four. Docents will also be able to tour the exhibit March 8-9 prior to the actual opening to the public.
